Thought the ref was decent for once actually.
Why all our subs have to look at Nolans holiday pictures on his IPAD for twenty minutes before they come on is beyond me, but there you go.

Not wanting to upset all you pop music fans but that noise at European games prior to kick off is far too loud and it's also far too repetitive; you have to shout at the bloke next to you if you want to talk. And that prick on the screen "playing" the music and dancing around, WTF is that all about? Our announcer seems to be dumbing down his act too.
Bring back the boys of the Royal British Legion, I say.

Spot on about Benrahma.
Did some great things and was, with Bowen, our most potent attacking threat. But he never gets the room he got last night and even against mediocre opposition he is guilty 4 or 5 times of giving it away when he didn’t have to. Also his final ball is frustrating in tge extreme. Does the hard bit only to hit a poor cross to no one although he did get one to Fornals right even though I’m not sure that was his intended target. Consistently inconsistent is the only way to describe him. Cannot see him ever holding down a starting place unfortunately but can perhaps do a job as an impact sub which is kind of how he gets used.
Shame as he has some good control and skill and decent shot. But it’s one in 5 on target. That back heel is indicative of why he is not trusted.
That said Paqueta have it away cheaply too much again but I think Moyes is doing his usual trick of not playing the bloke in a deeper role / his best position?
Bowen they couldn’t handle but even he was guilty of a few cheap turnovers but both Paqueta and Bowen do provide telling assists or goals ( Bowen) in games. Benny not so much and can go missing. In his defence again might be that he is actually better as a central midfielder which I think is where he made his name at Brentford?
Like I say, Moyes is like a bloke who buys two right shoes and wonders why we can’t walk very far or is going around in circles. Buy players for specific roles and tge ones they excel in seems to be something to consider for the future ?
Fornals central midfielder plays out wide. Vlasic the same. Paqueta playing an advanced No 10 role although he is at his best deeper as a no 8 for Lyon and Brazil. Benrahma out wide. Arguably even Antonio is really a wide man but at least that experiment worked for a bit until teams CBs learned to wrestle him to the ground and stop him rolling them.
Anyway a win is a win but we will need to be better against Premiership teams or better opposition as the Conference thing progresses

Let's be honest. This competition is the best chance we have had for years to win our first major trophy since 1980. We are in a group with pub teams. Anderlecht looked like a League Two side last night.
The fact Paqueta still can't create any chances or score against such an awful side and was hooked at half time is extremely worrying considering the club forked out over £50 million for him.

The only names that really jump out are Monaco, Lazio and Roma, and they are far from certain to, looking at the situations in their groups. Truth be told I've no idea how good or bad Monaco are these days anyway. Couple of other decent sides but not any that should really cause any concern to us at all.
Of those in our tournament already, Villareal, Fiorentina, Alkmar (currently top of theirleague over Ajax) and maybe Basel are to look out for, but again you'd probably have to back us over two legs against any of them.
Best not to get too hubristic though. i was guilty of that at the semi final stage of the EL last season...

I'm not sure if it's that straightforward, need to take a closer look. Mind you playing them wouldn't be all bad IMO, the sort of glam ties we should embrace, and our lot in Rome :-)

Roma play 2 teams I've never heard of, so you'd think they've still got a decent chance of finishing top 2.
There aren't too many teams that could potentially drop down that should worry us.

Agree that when the oppo is poor you have to factor that in when analysing your own sides performances, goes without saying really. These group games really are weak, not that it's our fault.
Looks like Roma may drop down, looks like they will have to win their last two games, which should be enough, I think.

Like a shit pre season friendly, Anderlecht we’re abysmal.
We did well mainly other than going 4/5 up and letting him put some kids on.
Few players looked really good, Bowen, Paqueta, Downes.
Some looked a bit shaky and lacking in confidence/match fitness, Emerson, Johnson.
Benrahma did his usual, some great passages of play followed by poor end product or shocking decision.
He’s the player that frustrates me the most, clearly got talent but he is in own head, his decision making is shocking and failure to protect the ball - summed up at 3 mins in injury time when attempting to keep the ball in a small space on the right wing, he blindly tries a back heel straight to an Anderlecht player.
Pleased he got his goal and some of his runs were great but how do the coaches improve his final decision? I dunno if they can.
Downes played really well, especially up until his yellow card but every pass was no more than 10 yards sideways, he looked forwards but then played safe, maybe an instruction from Moyes, protect the ball and keep possession especially as he was the anchor. Would be more to come if playing with a more senior midfield.

Excellent first half we are now looking fitter and sharper. Downes improves every time I see him, must get an outing in the premiership soon.
Unusual to see full time whistle blown when the ball is heading towards a penalty area, wonder if the ref realised he had made a cock up with penalty?

Opposition were really poor. For a team that supposedly like playing possession football they were overawed, kept giving us the ball cheaply and barely created anything. I dont think these games tell us much about our team. Another couple of injury set backs for centre backs. Pacquetas movement was really good, Bowen looks sharp, Cresswell stuck in a couple of decent balls.
Second half was too easy and we had settled and not interested in really pushing for more. Daft penalty made last 5 mins harder work than it should.
Players like Ogbonna, Emerson, Lanzini, Benrahma, Coufal and Downes are easily able to do a job at this level. Think Downes will get his chance in Premier league games off the bench. He has earnt it.

Yeh, was a good performance without finishing em off completely. That will come soon enough. No reason why we can’t keep it going in the league (The sicknotes will soon get over their knocks). The fun and games in the ‘south bank’ was the best action in the last 20 minutes. More Lionels than the ‘76 final. Nothing chucked our way by the ‘wall’.
